Butanediol is a diol of n-butane. It is produced either from acetylene and formaldehyde (Reppe process), butadiene, propylene oxide or maleic anhydride (Davy process).
Examples of applications
Butanediol is used predominantly in the fibre industry and it also finds application in the automotive industry and in the construction sector. It mainly plays a role in the production of tetrahydrofuran, a precursor for polytetramethylene ether glycol (PTMEG). BDO is also used in the production of plastics (TPU, COPE, PBT) and gamma-butyrolactone (GBL).
