Groundbreaking Ceremony of AGAIN Acetic Acid Production Site

The Groundbreaking Ceremony of the Danish/German Scale-up “Again” marks a true milestone in HELM's journey towards the successful commercialization of sustainable Acetic Acid.

HELM and Again aim to offer sustainable chemicals to the global markets. In this partnership HELM will take the role as Again's future distribution partner and attended the official ceremony.

Over the last month HELM Corporate Development has also strongly supported Again with their expertise in project development, a great example of teamwork and pushing bio solutions to life.

Again, the carbon transformation scale-up recycling CO₂ into valuable chemicals, is developing a new facility to convert waste CO₂ into reusable chemical products and bring sustainable chemical manufacturing to Texas.

Based in Texas City, the commercial facility is part of Again’s mission to enable the decarbonization of the petrochemical industry. The first-of-a-kind commercial plant will recycle waste CO₂ emissions from a tenant at the Diamond Infrastructure Solutions (Diamond) Texas City industrial park into sustainable chemicals, fertilizers and building blocks for products, including plastics and other materials such as acetic acid, a base chemical used in adhesives, solvents, plastics, textiles and cosmetics.

Securing sustainable, valuable products
Again's novel biomanufacturing technology feeds waste CO₂ gases directly into industrial bioreactors, where bacteria ferment it with hydrogen. This results in low-emission, industry-grade chemicals which are sold to customers at market-competitive prices. Again co-locates its facilities with industrial companies and sources the CO₂ directly onsite to minimize energy-demanding CO₂ transport.

Not only is Again reducing carbon emissions for industry, but its technology is also enabling organizations to shore up their supply chain resilience by reducing the need to import chemicals from across the world. Securing domestic supply chains is becoming a top priority for Western governments, including for commercial sectors such as chemicals for agriculture and pharmaceuticals.

Plug-and-play solutions for seamless integration
The company has already begun work at the Diamond Texas City site to construct the new facility and start production within a year. The facility will transform waste CO₂ into low-carbon commercial materials, enabling the manufacture of novel chemicals, fertilizers, and acetic acid. Again and leading global chemical distributor HELM AG will sell these products back to industry.

This is made possible thanks to Again’s plug-and-play solution, which seamlessly integrates into the existing industrial park infrastructure, lowering process risk for existing production lines and enabling speedy development and construction timelines. The strategy mirrors Again’s successful implementation at its first facility in Copenhagen, where the technology integrates with an industrial wastewater treatment plant.

Max Kufner, co-founder of Again, said:
“We are excited to launch our first US-based CO₂ transformation facility here in Texas City. Decarbonizing chemical production continues to be one of our main missions as a company, but just as importantly, facilities like Texas City will enable sustainable chemical production to strengthen supply resilience. This is crucial for business continuity and enabling a secure supply of market-competitive, cleaner products for key American manufacturing industries.”

Ed Noack, CEO of Diamond Infrastructure Solutions, said:
“We are pleased to welcome Again to our Texas City site. This partnership represents an important step in our ongoing commitment to innovation and sustainability, while demonstrating the benefits of facility co-location within one of Diamond’s industrial parks. Again's carbon transformation technology aligns with our vision of a sustainable future and our entrepreneurial spirit. At Diamond, we pride ourselves on fostering a culture of driving forward new ideas and solutions. Together, we are reducing carbon emissions, enhancing supply chain resilience, and making a positive impact on our community and industry. We look forward to the benefits this collaboration will bring.
